Seasons Greetings from
Dr Robert Harper

This month we will be providing some advice for parents about dental health for children. As the resident Dental Therapist, I want the first dental visit for our little patients to be relaxing in order to set them up for a life time of positive dental experiences. We make the first visit fun and encourage parents to bring their children in from 2yrs of age so they can get to know the staff, sights, sounds and go for a “ride in the chair”. Examinations will begin from the age of 3-4yrs.

Top tips for toddlers

  • To soothe the irritation of teething, give your baby a teething ring to chew on. Cooling this in the fridge is helpful.
  • Avoid dipping a child’s dummy in any foods or liquids, especially honey or sweet syrup
  • If your baby needs a drink between feeds, use cooled boiled water.
  • Follow a nutritious diet and ensure your own teeth and gums are clean and healthy during pregnancy and beyond.
  • After feeding, wipe your baby’s teeth with a moist cloth.
  • Introduce your infant to tooth cleaning as soon as teeth appear. As infants can’t control swallowing, don’t use toothpaste.
  • Avoid prolonged or frequent suckling beyond nutritional needs.
  • Avoid putting a child to bed with a bottle containing anything other than water.
  • Look for early signs of decay in your child’s mouth; ask your dental therapist or dentist about the lift the lip technique and what to look for.
  • At about eighteen months, bring your child to RFD for a check-up so they can become accustomed to regular dental visits.
  • Avoid sharing baby’s spoon to prevent transfer of decay causing bacteria to your child.
  • Encourage low sugar diet it will help their teeth and long term weight management.

And for the adults we have some advice to help your teeth survive the celebrations of the festive season.

Protecting your teeth over the “Silly Season”

Christmas is well known as a time of celebration and indulgence and what better way to celebrate than with a lovely glass (or two!) of vino! But what effect could that wine have on your teeth? A study recently published in the Australian Dental Journal has concluded that the habit of rinsing wine around the mouth caused the pH of the mouth to significantly decrease for up to 6 minutes after ridding the mouth of the liquid. It is this extended period of time with a reduced pH that causes an increase in the risk of developing dental erosion. This form of erosion is known as Acid Erosion and is caused by having an acidic diet i.e. drinking a lot of juices, sports drinks, coke/pepsi, wine etc. During this erosive period, calcium is leached from the enamel causing the teeth to become more susceptible to mechanical wear (aggressive tooth brushing/grinding) and to decay.

So how do you protect your teeth? Try not to swish drinks around the mouth and prolong the time around your teeth. Taking a sip of water after your wine is a great way to help clear the mouth of the acids. Drinking milk and eating cheese are excellent at neutralising the acidic environment of the mouth.

Saliva has a neutralising capacity so being well hydrated is important so you produce enough saliva to help bring the mouth back to a neutral pH as quickly as possible. To know if you’re drinking enough water in your day multiply your weight by 0.033. For example, If you weigh 62kgs multiply that by 0.033 which equals 2.046. Therefore you should try and drink a little over 2L of water per day to maintain adequate levels of hydration.

There are products available that can also help strengthen and condition your teeth and have a preventive role. My favourite is GC Tooth Mousse Plus. This is a topical paste that delivers calcium and fluoride into the mouth to help introduce those strengthening minerals to aid in preventing erosion of the enamel and potential decay. Recaldent chewing gum is another way to help neutralise the oral environment after an acid attack. We recommend keeping some handy in the car or handbag and chew after meals or on the way home after that Friday night drink!

For bike riders why not chew Recaldent as you ride or after the obligatory Sunday morning ride Café Latte. If you are concerned you may be causing erosion of your enamel from an acidic diet please consult myself or Robert at your next dental appointment.

Seasons Greetings from Pia your Dental Hygienist
