Richmond Fine Dentistry

NEW STAFF MEMBER

This month we welcome Dental Hygienist/Therapist Nicole Masters.

Nicole came to our practice from South Australia, where she studied Bachelor of Oral Health at the University of Adelaide. She has had 9 years experience in the dental industry and 3 years practising both hygiene and therapy.

Nicole is keen to educate patients on how they can improve their oral hygiene & guide these people through the stages of professional care, that will ensure they are able to take good care of their mouths at home. Effective at-home-care regimes; regularity of hygiene visits & ensuring comfortable, relaxing appointments are three things Nicole finds fundamental to adequate dental health.

As a dental therapist, Nicole loves caring for the oral health of children and teenagers. She considers this a rewarding role. Through her treatment, she aims to establish a safe and happy environment for regular check-ups and comfortable, hassle free visits for restorative treatment as well. Healthy smiles growing up, equals happy smiling adults!

When Nicole’s not at work she enjoys, getting outdoors, being active, Pilates & music.

TOOTH FRIENDLY FOODS

Apples, celery, and carrots- These crunchy foods help to remove plaque from teeth.

Fruit- Sugars that occur naturally in fruits are less harmful to teeth than regular table sugar and natural sugars such as honey and raw sugar that still do promote cavities.

Natural foods are best. Replace processed snacks with fruits and vegetables, nuts, and seeds.
Avoid foods that are chewy and sticky as these cling to your teeth the longest.

Raisins are sticky and sweet, but research has indicated that raisins contain phytochemicals that discourage the growth of cavity-causing bacteria, as well as prevent the bacteria from clinging to teeth.

Baked tortilla chips, pretzels, whole grain crackers, and popcorn are better choices. You won’t find much sugar in these foods.

Water-drink water and you’ll be rinsing your teeth as well as quenching your thirst.

BOTTLED WATER & FLUORIDE

About Fluoride

Keeping kids' teeth healthy requires more than just daily brushing. Fluoride plays an important role in healthy tooth development and cavity prevention.
Fluoride exists naturally in water sources and is derived from fluorine, the thirteenth most common element in the Earth's crust. It is well known that fluoride helps prevent and even reverse the early stages of tooth decay.

Fluoride prevents the acid produced by the bacteria in plaque from dissolving, or demineralizing, tooth enamel. Fluoride also allows teeth damaged by acid to repair, or remineralize. Fluoride cannot repair cavities, but it can reverse low levels of tooth decay and thus prevent new cavities from forming.

For over 60 years, water fluoridation has proved to be a safe and cost-effective way to reduce dental caries. Today, water fluoridation is estimated to reduce tooth decay by 20-40%.
Some parents purchase bottled water for their kids to drink instead of tap water. Most bottled waters lack fluoride, but fluoridated bottled water is now available.

PRODUCTS OF THE MONTH

Neutrafluor 5000 plus toothpaste

NeutraFluor 5000 Plus is a high concentration sodium fluoride toothpaste for use by patients who have a high risk of dental decay. Scientific research shows that when toothpaste containing a relatively high amount of fluoride is applied to the teeth it offers increased protection against acid attack from decay causing bacteria in the mouth.
NeutraFluor 5000 Plus should only be used on the recommendation of your dentist or dental hygienist, as part of a tooth decay prevention routine.

Neutrafluor 220 daily rinse

Colgate Neutrafluor 220 Rinse is also formulated to assist in the prevention of dental caries in children over 6 years and adults when used on a daily basis. May be particularly useful during orthodontic treatment or for management of patients with moderate caries risk
